The motivating factor behind many students’ decisions to seek out part-time jobs and internships is often money. Finding money to pay for rent, school, books and other living expenses is the top priority for many students looking to make college life a bit more enjoyable and less stressful. What they do not realize, however, is that with an internship often comes the benefit of real world experience that will continually benefit the student as the move through their college education, enter the working world and build their career throughout their life.

A college internship is often much more valuable than the money that is made performing whatever duties it entails. Having something on the resume is also a valuable benefit that many students consider when taking an internship. Simply putting the experience on a piece of paper is not the true benefit that comes from an internship either, however. The real experience and practical application of knowledge that may have been attained in school will continue to benefit and help the student as they move through their college career and enter the working world. It will even stay with them as they continue to build their career and become successful in whatever field they so choose.

What a college internship has to offer outside of the obvious monetary benefits is something overlooked by students. While they would probably agree that having this experience is a valuable addition to their own personal growth and experiences, they do not consider this when looking for an internship. Because of this, they may miss out on what could be very valuable learning experiences. Taking whatever internship they can find so long as it pays a decent enough wage to support their living expenses, students will overlook what else can be gained from having an internship.

Too often does a college internship become a mundane chore for students who could be using their time much more efficiently. Filing and getting coffee for the bosses does not help them grow at all. While it gives them some exposure to office life, it may do more to scare them away from this life than anything else. Data entry and washing dishes for the office will not help students develop important skills they should be developing while at a college internship.

Leadership skills are something that every employer will look for when hiring new employees just out of college. Students with these valuable skills will already be at an advantage before the interview process even gets under way. Having an internship that allows its students to develop these skills is something that every student should look for when considering what internship to participate in. The benefits of real world experience and the development of important skills such as leadership and managerial skills should not be overlooked when considering various internships.

Having a valuable college experience often starts in the classroom and is carried over to what the student chooses to do with their spare time out of the classroom. Using their time wisely, students that participate in a college internship and develop as individuals often have a major advantage in the job market upon graduation.
