Experience while still in college is something every recruiter, potential employer and interviewer is interested in when screening potential new hires. Looking at local colleges and universities is often a recruiting strategy of many large companies, so being able to distinguish oneself from the rest of the crowd is important in getting noticed by these companies. An internship is one way to get noticed, as it will stand out on a resume and give the student something valuable to talk about during an interview.
An internship college is often overlooked by college students who deem extracurricular activities and work experience as unnecessary in finding a job after graduation. Many think that by getting good grades, having a good attendance record and studying hard, they will be handsomely rewarded upon graduating. While these are certainly important in achieving the most out of a college experience, getting other experiences is also important in become well rounded, something many employers look for in their employees.
One-dimensional students with only high grade point averages to boast about are boring to employers as they go through resumes and interviews. With so many students appearing the same to them, they begin to get tired of interviewing the same type of recent graduate or student over and over. Having something that distinguishes them from the pack will help students get noticed and hopefully find a job that they want. Setting himself or herself apart from the rest is often the key in getting noticed by the right person. An internship college will often help students experience the real world in a way that few students are able to. With experiences to talk about on an interview, employers will not find them boring and may even appreciate that they have something new or unique to say.
Many students that participate in an internship college will have important stories to tell, valuable lessons learned or interesting experiences to speak about when talking to a potential employer. They will find this interesting and will enjoy speaking to a student that has something to say that does not directly pertain to school or class. Getting out of the classroom helps students learn things that teachers or professors may leave out of their lesson plans. Learning valuable skills that they are not able to learn inside of a classroom will prove extremely beneficial to students as they embark on the rest of their career.
Not every internship college brings valuable experiences and life lessons. Many internships do not properly utilize their interns and have them file papers or enter data into a computer all day. Hardly the valuable experience employers are looking for. Finding an internship college that allows them to perhaps get out of an office setting and into a new and exciting field that few have the chance to participate in will allow students to learn more about the world than their fellow classmates. Not only will they have experiences to speak about, but also they will learn to exhibit leadership skills and managerial skills that, if they play their cards right, the interviewer or employer will surely pick up on.
