People throughout history have tried to study dreams. It’s a deep subject having to do with everything from why people dream to dreams that seem to be real.

When people study dreams one of the areas of focus is lucid dreaming. When people know it’s a dream it’s a lucid dream. Sometimes it’s called conscious dreaming because the conscious mind remains in control. A lucid dreamer can change the dream. This might involve changing imagery or the entire dream environment. To lucid dreamers the dream is nearly real.

Those who study dreams talk about a dream initiated lucid dream. It starts as a normal dream. But then the dreamer realizes they’re dreaming.

The other type of lucid dream is the wake initiated lucid dream. This is when a person falls asleep directly into a lucid dream. The conscious mind is active the whole time. In essence the person is never wholly asleep.

One person who liked to study dreams was Celia Green. Her lucid dream study took place in 1968. She looked at lucid dreams from all sides. She determined that lucid dreaming was different from other dreaming. She tied REM sleep to lucid dreaming. REM is a well known sleep phase associated with rapid eye movement.

Like other people who study dreams, Celia was also interested in the false awakening. This is when people think they’ve woken up. The person, however, is still dreaming. A woman tells of dreaming that she was being chased by a pack of dogs. Just as they pounced she woke safe in bed. Suddenly a pack of dogs burst into the room, jumping on her. She screamed, and then really woke up. Celia theorized that false awakenings and lucid dreams were part of the same phenomenon. The conscious mind is still in control in both dream states.

Norman Malcolm took up to study dreams. He wrote a book called Dreaming in 1959. He realized that eye movements connected to the eye moving in the dream had something to do with lucid dreaming. His theory wasn’t proven until the 1970s in which a study involved a subject sending signals to the waking world from with in his dream. He sent the messages by moving his eyes according to a code.
